Single Women Network (SIWONET) is a network of Women who are widowed, abandoned, deserted, thrown-out, divorced, or women who have never married and women’s groups and organizations advocating for the rights of Single Women in Uganda. Without a man in her life, does a woman have a life What is her identity? How is she perceived by society? Society knows, but doesn’t know; society sees but doesn’t see. In Uganda, there are many women who are widowed, abandoned, deserted, thrown- out, divorced, or women who have never married. The society knows these women exist but society doesn’t see them. Who are single women? How do they live, how do they survive?
These questions and many more others depict the status of low-income single women in Uganda. SIWONET is working to end marginalization and discrimination against single women in Uganda. SIWONET is organizing, mobilizing and uniting single women to look after each other and advocate for their rights and dignity. SIWONET is championing advocacy campaigns so that single women can be recognized and respected in society. There is need to respect the status and choice of not just widows and divorced women but also of women who are single and did not marry by choice.
